DU student stabbed to death in Suhrawardy Udyan

A Dhaka University student was stabbed to death in Suhrawardy Udyan. The deceased, Shahriar Alam, was a student of the 2018-19 academic year at the Samya Institute of Education and Research. He is the literature and publications secretary of the Sir A.F. Rahman Hall branch of the Bangladesh Chhatra Dal.

Samya was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital by his classmates at 12:15 am on Tuesday. Doctors declared him dead. His body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy.

Quoting a doctor, Dhaka Medical Police Outpost In-charge Md. Faruk confirmed his death. He said, “The doctors examined him and declared him dead. He had a sharp weapon injury on his right leg.”

According to eyewitnesses, around 12:00 am on Tuesday, Samya and his two friends were walking past the open stage of Suhrawardy Udyan when they were hit by a bike. An argument broke out with the bikers. At one point, a group of 8-10 people attacked them. The miscreants hit Samya on the head and legs indiscriminately and fled. He was seriously injured.

Samya’s friend Bayezid told Ajker Patrika, “We were leaving after hanging out at the canteen adjacent to the Kali Temple. Then we were suddenly attacked by miscreants. Samya was stabbed and lost consciousness due to heavy bleeding. Later, when he was taken to the medical center, the doctor declared him dead.”

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Munsur told Ajker Patrika, “We immediately went to the spot after receiving the news of the incident. Samya was taken to the DMCH, but he died there. We are investigating the matter.”

Ashraful Islam Rafi, a classmate of the deceased, said that Samya lived in room number 222 of F Rahman Hall. His home is in Ullapara Upazila of Sirajganj.
